As you can probably guess, today was my actual first day on the job as my career unwraps. Today I got up early and had breakfast in Donovan. As soon as I started the car and pulled out of campus, I knew that there was no turning back. I was wondering how this day would turn out. I was headed for the Alan Shawn Feinstein Broad Street Elementary School. Unfortunately, I ended up getting lost by taking a wrong turn. It was a while before I realized I was going in the wrong direction. I didn't mind the long drive so much because it gave me a chance to relax a little. Actually, I didn't relax all that much because I realized I was going to be late on my first day. I was actually scheduled to be there for 9:15, but it was more like 9:30.
I signed in at the main office after pressing a buzzer to get into the school. The secretaries gave me a really good looking VIPS volunteer badge to hang around my neck. I finally got to Rm. 207 to meet my third grade class. I introduced myself as Ms. Boghossian, but they are going to hopefully call me Ms. B.
The teacher, Ms. Chippis, said they were really busy being in the middle of testing. There were about 15 children in her classroom. It was a diverse classroom with mostly a Hispanic background. It was funny in that the boys all were black and all the girls were light. When I came in, the children were sitting on a colorful rug on the floor with a books following along with a player reading about Central Park. While they were reading, I saw that the boys kept looking over at me. After that, they were doing what looked to be a fun word game. This activity practiced their "o" sounds. Afterward, they had to put each column of words in alphabetical order. I took my leave at this point. The next time I go back won't be until after Columbus Day since the kids are busy with testing until then. Ms. Chippis and I still have to work out our schedules to figure out the best day of the week for me to come in. Oh, I had a fun time and a great first hand experience with so many young kids. I'm looking forward to my next visit. I hope Ms. Chippis and I can work around my class schedule.
